In addition to being able to customize the ornaments to your own style, creating DIY ornaments is also a fun way to make holiday memories with your family.
These adorable mason jar lid wreath ornaments are the perfect holiday crafting activity with your children. It also makes a great activity with a few friends around the table, with a few festive snacks set out for everyone to enjoy.
They make use of items you probably already have at home to create a rustic holiday ornament that will look perfect on your tree this year.

- Buttons
- Glue gun

- Some decorating ideas are shown above.
- Alternatively, try wrapping some ribbon around the ring, as shown above.
Variations:
The real fun comes when its time to embellish your mini Christmas wreaths. I’ve used red and green ribbon and buttons to match the styling on my tree, but you can get creative and use and combination of colors that suit your own Christmas color theme at home.
Here are some ideas of other items you could use:
- swap jute twine for red, green or white twine
- if you don’t have twine look for some colored cotton yarn instead
- wrap around strings of small pearl beads
- look for some silver or gold glitter twine to wrap around
- decorate the wreath with pompoms, small pine cones, pine stems, small bunches of fake holly berries, bells or make some glitter stars
Top tips:
- USE UP ODD JAR LIDS: I use a lot of jars for storage in both my craft room and in my kitchen. I often find I have a lot of unused lids without the jars to pair with them. This is a great way to put those lids to use by doing something creative with them.
- BUY LIDS IF YOU DON’T HAVE AT HOME: If you don’t have lids lying around your home, you can buy packs of lids from Amazon (see link below) or your local Walmart or Target stores.
- USE ANY SIZE LIDS: These simple Christmas wreath decorations are a great addition to your Christmas tree, and you can adapt the size of the wreath by using larger or smaller sized mason jar lids.
- WATCH THE GLUE GUN: If you are crafting with very young children I recommend keeping the glue gun at a safe distance. You keep hold of the hot glue activity and instead allow them to wrap the jar lid with the twine and other ribbon decoration.
