Marshmallow Hot Cocoa Snowman

Sharing is caring!

Here’s an easy way to make your hot cocoa a little more fun this winter! These Marshmallow Hot Chocolate Snowmen are super easy to put together and the kids will get a kick out of having a little snowman floating in their hot cocoa!

Marshmallow Hot Cocoa Snowman

Adding marshmallows in the shape of a snowman to create a Marshmallow Hot Cocoa Snowman is so much fun and your kids are sure to love them.

What I like to do is set the ingredients out into individual bowls then let the kids make up their own snowmen, while I melt the chocolate for decorating the snowmen.

Then while the kids are decorating their snowmen I make the hot cocoa ready for topping with the marshmallow snowmen.

This is a great fun activity over the Winter holidays with your children or grandchildren. This activity works particularly well after a long walk in the cooler months when we all want a mug of hot cocoa to warm us up.

Recipe ingredients

  • MARSHMALLOWS: use white marshmallows and allow 3 per snowman.
  • PRETZELS: I use a pack of thin pretzel sticks for the snowman’s arms.
  • CANDY: I use candy corn for the snowman’s nose.
  • CHOCOLATE CHIPS: use mini chocolate chips for the eyes.
  • TOOTHPICKS: I use toothpicks to hold the marshmallows together.

How to make Marshmallow Hot Cocoa Snowman

  • Lay three marshmallows in a row.
  • Take the middle marshmallow and run a toothpick through the center leaving most of it exposed.
  • Take a second toothpick and run it through the center of the opposite side of that same marshmallow – again leaving most of it exposed.
  • Push marshmallows through the top toothpick and the bottom toothpick to connect the three.
  • Break a thin pretzel stick in half and press the rough edged sides through each side of the center marshmallow for the snowman’s arms.
  • Divide the candy corn by cutting the different color sections apart with a knife or scissors.
  • Take the orange section and rub it through your fingers to shape it into a carrot for the snowman’s nose.
  • Heat up a small plate in the microwave for 1-2 minutes.
  • Take three mini chocolate chips, and one-by-one, simply hold them by the point and press them on the hot plate for 1-2 seconds so the bottom gets slightly melted.
  • Press them down the center of the snowman for his buttons.
  • Take a tablespoon of the chocolate chips and melt them in a small bowl in the microwave.
  • Spoon the melted chocolate into one corner of a small sandwich bag.
  • Snip off a tiny edge of the bag and pipe on the snowman’s eyes and mouth.
  • Prepare your hot cocoa and gently lay the snowman on top, and enjoy!

Recipe hints & tips

  • I’ve placed my marshmallow snowmen over cocoa, but they work equally well with hot chocolate or any other warm malted drinks.
  • Add a layer of snow to your cup of hot cocoa with some canned whipping cream and set the marshmallow snowman on top.

FAQs

What happens to marshmallows in hot cocoa?

When marshmallows are put into a mug of hot cocoa, or hot chocolate, they start to melt and sweeten the cocoa.

Do marshmallows make hot cocoa better?

If you asked my kids you would get a resounding yes! They love nothing more than a mug of warm cocoa on a cold day and when the marshmallows melt into the hot drink they add an extra layer of sweetness.
