These Wooden Stick Pencils are so cute, fun, and easy to make. Crafting is a great way of helping kids to work on shapes, colors, cutting and counting with this simple pencil craft created from wooden craft sticks.
Wooden Stick Pencils Craft
Wooden Stick Pencils are a great classroom crafting activity. They are also a lovely idea for an end of year Teachers gift as they’d be fantastic to put outside a classroom door to identify the teacher’s name.
You could also use these wooden stick pencils inside the classroom as an easy way to assign students desk space, or as a bulletin board display.
Simple crafting activities like this wooden stick crafting activity can be used to help children learn names, identify shapes and colors, improve their fine motor skills with cutting, and word on their numeracy as they count the number of sticks needed to make each pencil.
There are so many fun uses, and it’s very easy to customize the pencils by changing out the colors, etc. to match school colors, or the colors you are studying.
You could even make them different colors to help with learning them all, make them smaller or larger when working on numbers, etc. Let your creativity flow!
What you will need to make Wooden Sticks Pencils Craft:
- I use 4 Dollar Store Craft Sticks to make each pencil (buying plain sticks and getting the kids to color them is a cheaper option than buying colored sticks)
- A yellow Dollar Store Washable Marker
- Cardstock – Kraft, you will need black, pink and grey card
- Pencil
- Permanent marker with a fine tip
- Use Liquid Glue with fine tip applicator or Low Temp Glue Gun with Glue
- Pencil Patterns can be downloaded online
- Scissors
What are craft sticks called?
Craft sticks are wooden sticks, they come in packs of plain or colored sticks. These are also called popsicle sticks, or lolly sticks.
What is the best glue to use on craft sticks?
If the kids want to do the entire activity themselves I recommend using Liquid Glue with a fine tip applicator. However, if you plan to help them out, or make up the pencils in advance for the kids to decorate, a Glue Gun with Glue is ideal.
PLEASE TAKE CARE when using glue guns around children and avoid burning, as both the glue and the gun become really hot!

Variations:
Kids love to craft and decorate these easy wooden stick pencils their own way. So here’s some ideas to help them get creative:
- I’ve used yellow markers but you can use any color marker in this crafting activity.
- Decorate the pencils using your school colors.
- Use any color card for the base of the pencil, rubber and pencil tip.
- Make the pencils smaller or larger by adding or reducing the numbers of craft sticks you use.
- Add some glitter to the sticks if you want to add a little more sparkle.
- Glue some buttons, or foam crafting shapes to the pencils.
