Slow Cooker Honey Mustard Ham

Slow Cooker Honey Mustard Ham

Sharing is caring!

Slow Cooker Honey Mustard Ham is very easy to prepare and ideal for serving a crowd! Perfect for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter or any other holiday gathering with family and friends!

My family all love my slow cooker honey mustard ham and it’s a joint of meat I cook a lot at home. I always like to cook my own ham as one joint goes a long way. Not only does it taste better it also costs a less than any ham you can buy in the store.

A whole ham joint can be pricey to buy in store. Making a honey and mustard ham at home is significantly less expensive than buying one that is already cooked and ready to serve. Not only that, if you cook your own joint you can get several meals out of it and it then becomes a far more affordable option.

I know it can be intimidating if you’ve never cooked ham before, but it’s really not that difficult. I show you here that with the help of the slow cooker and a quick glaze under the broiler, it’s a lot easier that you might think. Even better the reward at the end is a delicious meal that will taste better than anything you can buy in-store!

Many people enjoy eating Ham for major holidays, in fact, my Brown Sugar and Coke Glazed Ham Recipe is one of the most popular recipes on my site. I get many messages and comments asking if it can be cooked in the slow cooker to free up the oven, and it can be. Today, I’ll be sharing my recipe for Slow Cooker Honey Mustard Ham.

How to cook Honey Mustard Ham in the slow cooker:

  • Remove the packaging from the ham and give the ham a quick rinse and pat dry.
  • The fat cap is the large area of fat and skin that is often attached to the ham. If the fat cap is really thick take a sharp knife and carefully cut approximately ½ of the cap away from the ham.
  • Do not cut too close to the flesh of the ham, as the fat cap adds extra moisture to the ham and you don’t want the meat drying out.
  • Place the ham into the slow cooker pot, fat cap side up, and add the chicken broth or water.
  • Cover with the lid and cook the roast on low for 8 – 10 hours OR high for 4 – 5 hours.
  • Remove the roast after the cooking time is up and place on a baking sheet and turn your oven on to broil

Honey Mustard Ham Glaze:

  • Mix up the honey and mustard mix ready to baste the ham with the mixture.
  • If you find the mixture is very thick, add a splash of water or broth to loosen up the mix slightly.
  • Brush on the glaze, taking time to cover the entire ham.
  • Place it under the broiler and watch it closely. Broil for approximately 3 -4 minutes or until the top begins to caramelize.
  • Remove the ham from the oven and let rest for 10 minutes before serving.
  • Enjoy!

Recipe ingredients and flavor variations:

  • HAM: I use a 6-8lbs uncooked bone-in ham, smoked pork shoulder but you could also use a boneless joint.
  • HONEY: Adds the sweetness to the sticky honey mustard glaze. If you don’t have honey you could substitute with maple syrup as that would work too.
  • MUSTARD: I use whole grain mustard in my honey mustard glaze but you could also use Dijon mustard.
  • BROTH: Chicken broth is added to cook the ham in the slow cooker. Don’t be tempted to use a dark beef broth, the flavor is too strong. If you don’t have chicken broth just use water.

When choosing ham is bone-in or boneless best?

A bone-in ham is great if you’re going to use the bone to flavor a soup later. If you don’t need the bone for another dish, a boneless ham works great. That way you don’t need to worry about slicing around it later. Either cut works in this recipe.

Can I cook Honey Mustard Ham in a regular oven?

Yes you can! This recipe is easily adapted to cook the ham in the oven if you prefer. Just reference the cooking times on the packaging for the ham you’ve purchased. Bake the joint of ham for the length of time that matches the size of ham you’ve bought. Once it’s done, pick this recipe back up when you are ready to glaze and broil the ham.

Recipe Tips:

  • Take care not to make the honey mustard ham glaze too runny. You want the glaze to stick to the ham when under the broiler.
  • When the ham is under the broiler, do not walk away. The glaze only takes 3-4 minutes to cook and you risk it burning if you don’t pay attention.
  • Always set the ham aside for 10 minutes before slicing and serving. This is true of any roasting joint of meat. Resting allows the meat to relax and the juices to be absorbed back into the joint. This will always give you tender moist slices of meat.
  • Leftover ham can be used in all sorts of dishes. Enjoy it cold or warm it up, however you like it! Great in sandwiches, salads, add to a homemade soup or pasta sauce. The list of possibilities is endless.

Can Slow Cooker Honey Mustard Ham be made ahead?

My slow cooker honey mustard ham is a great make ahead dish. Once cooked and cooled, it can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Can I freeze Honey Mustard Ham?

Any leftover ham can be placed in an airtight container or zip-top bag and placed in the freezer for another day. Once stored this tasty ham will keep in the freezer for up to 2 months. When ready to enjoy, simply remove from the freezer and defrost thoroughly in the fridge before using.

Serving suggestions:

Cheese and ham are a great flavor combination and I love to serve slices of my honey mustard ham with my Scalloped Potatoes with Cheese. I then keep any other side dishes on the lighter side, like my Roasted Green Beans.
