For a quick and easy dessert you have to try my Dutch oven peach cobbler with canned peaches. I whip together a quick cobbler batter, combine the peaches with vanilla and cinnamon, before spreading gently over the batter and baking to perfection in a hot oven.
Dutch Oven Peach Cobbler
The Dutch oven is ideal for making cobbler as the thick pan holds a lot of heat. This heat allows the batter to puff up around the fruit, soft on the bottom, crisp on the top, making this the best Dutch oven peach cobbler recipe you’ll ever cooked.
I love baking dessert for my family, but don’t want to be in the kitchen for hours preparing it. With just a few easy store cupboard ingredients you have a tasty dessert ready in no time. This is a real easy Dutch oven peach cobbler recipe as there are only a few steps to follow and none of them are complicated.
Fresh peaches taste great when they are in season, and you can certainly swap the canned peaches for fresh when they are soft and sweet. However, out of season fresh peaches can be hard and flavorless, that’s when I crab a can of peaches.
I’m a huge fan of using canned fruits, they’re a great addition to any dessert. Peaches are a particular favorite as canned peaches always taste great so I can make this dessert all year round.
Dutch oven peach cobbler recipe ingredients
- BUTTER: I use melted butter in the cobbler batter. You can use salted or unsalted butter here.
- SUGAR: I use granulated sugar in the cobbler batter, but brown sugar in the fruit layer as brown sugar adds great depth of molasses flavor to the peaches.
- FLOUR; I use all purpose flour in the cobbler batter.
- RAISING AGENT: I use baking powder to help the batter rise when baking in the oven.
- SALT: a little salt is added to the batter as it helps to balance out the other sweet flavors in the dish.
- MILK: you can use any variety of milk in the cobbler batter.
- PEACHES: I use 2 x 29-ounce cans of sliced peaches to make a cobbler to serve 6 diners.
- CORNSTARCH: I add cornstarch to the fruit base as this helps thicken the fruit layer and stops it being too wet and soggy once baked.
- VANILLA: I flavor the peaches with some vanilla extract.
- SPICE: I add some ground cinnamon to the fruit layer, as peaches and cinnamon are a great flavor pairing.
How to make Dutch oven peach cobbler
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Pour the melted butter into a 10 inch Dutch oven.
In a large bowl, whisk together the sugar, flour, baking powder, and salt.
Add the milk and stir until combined.
Pour the mixture over the top of the butter in the Dutch oven. Do not stir the ingredients together!
In a separate bowl, stir together the peaches, brown sugar, cornstarch, vanilla extract, and cinnamon.
Spread the peach mixture over the top of the batter in the pan, making sure not to stir the peaches into the batter.
Bake for 50 to 60 minutes, until the crust is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out clean.
Allow to rest in the pan for around 10 minutes before serving.
Flavor variations
- Peaches – for ease I’ve used canned peaches, but you can certainly swap for fresh peaches when they are in season.
- Canned fruit – swap canned peaches for other canned fruits like cherries, pineapple or pears.
- Combine flavors – peaches work well with other fruits, particularly berries. So, add some fresh blueberries, blackberries, strawberries or raspberries to the fruit layer.
- Ground spices – swap the ground cinnamon for nutmeg, allspice, cardamon or ginger which also work really well with the peaches.
Serving suggestion
This deliciously fruit dessert is best served warm, straight from the oven. Serve it with some whipped cream, some warm custard or a scoop of your favorite vanilla or dairy ice cream like I’ve done here.
Recipe hints & tips
- Take time to properly drain the peaches, too much peach juice will make the cobbler batter soggy.
- Allow the dessert to rest for 10 minutes when it comes out of the oven. Not only does this help it cool a little before serving, it also allows the batter to rest and the cobbler to set a little.
FAQs
A cobbler has a topping that is more dough or batter like in consistency. Whereas a peach crumble has a loose crumble/crisp style topping made with loose ingredients rubbed together (often including rolled oats), and sprinkled over the fruit base.
Keep leftover cobbler in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to five days. You can reheat it in the microwave or eat it cold right out of the fridge. Either way, it will taste delicious!
This is a dessert that is best served fresh from the pan. If frozen the the dough will become soggy when it thaws.
