Peach Dump CakePeach Dump Cake

My family all love dessert, but I don’t always have time to spend hours preparing it. That’s when quick and easy dessert recipes like this easy peach dump cake come in very handy. Using a box of cake mix and canned peaches it’s ready in no time.

Hands on prep time with this dessert is minimal, just 5 minutes, as I make the peach dump cake with cake mix. I use a box of yellow cake mix, but you could use vanilla or white cake mix. Just make sure to follow my instructions, and not the instructions on the cake mix package, otherwise it won’t turn out right!

For ease, I’ve chosen to make my peach dump cake with canned peaches. You place the whole can of peaches, including the juice in the bottom of the dish. If you plan on using fresh peaches, you will need to add a little water along with the peaches, in place of the peach juice.

Peach dump cake recipe ingredients

  • PEACHES – I used 2 15-ounce cans of sliced peaches, along with their juice, in this easy dessert.
  • CAKE MIX – a box of yellow cake mix is spread, or dumped, over the fruit to form the cake layer.
  • BUTTER – cubes of butter are placed over the top of the cake mix, before the cake is put in the oven. You can use either salted or unsalted butter in this recipe, whichever you have to hand.

Flavor variations

  • Peaches – for ease I’ve used canned peaches, but you can certainly swap for fresh peaches when they are in season.
  • Canned fruit – swap canned peaches for other canned fruits like cherries, pineapple or pears.
  • Combine flavors – peaches work well with other fruits, particularly berries. So, add some fresh blueberries, blackberries, strawberries or raspberries to the fruit layer.
  • Cake mix – I’ve opted for a yellow cake mix, but you could use white, vanilla or chocolate cake mix.
  • Ground spices – stir some ground spices into the peach layer, for example ground cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cardamon or ginger which work really well with the peaches.

Serving suggestion

This deliciously fruity dessert is best served warm, straight from the oven. I like to serve it with some whipped cream, some warm custard or a scoop of my favorite vanilla or dairy ice cream like I’ve done here.

Recipe hints & tips

  • DO NOT make the cake mix using package instructions, this will make a cake batter and that’s not what you need to do here. Instead pour the dry cake mix over the cake and top with the butter.
  • Don’t mix the cake mix through the fruit, just dump the mixture over the top and give it a gently press down.

FAQs

What’s the difference between a dump cake and a cobbler?

A cobbler topping is usually biscuit or batter based, and mixed a little through the fruit layer. Whereas, with a dump cake, the cake layer is dumped on top of the fruit layer and not mixed through it.

How to tell when a dump cake is done?

You know the dump cake is cooked, when the top is golden and bubbly.

How to store dump cake?

As the recipe contains butter, once cooked and cooled, cover the dish and place it in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. When ready to enjoy you can warm it up again in the microwave in 30 second increments, or pop it back into a warm oven to heat through.
