This rice Krispie cereal treat recipe is perfect if you want to make something special but don’t have a lot of time or cooking experience. It’s hard to get these wrong! They are quick and simple and always taste amazing. The heart shapes are made with a cookie cutter and the beautiful icing is made with melting chocolate. 

These hearts are easy to pack up with cellophane and ribbon to gift to your friends and family. The best part is that they are gooey, soft, and crunchy. No one will be able to say no to these cute little conversation starters.

How To Make Conversation Hearts Rice Krispie Treats

Spray a 9”x13” casserole dish with cooking spray and set aside.

In a large pot on medium heat, melt butter.

Add marshmallows and stir frequently until fully melted.

Pour in crispy rice cereal and gently stir until fully incorporated.

Transfer the mixture to the prepared pan, using a spatula to press into an even layer. Allow the treats to cool completely.

Once cooled, transfer the treats to a cutting board and use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out hearts.

Melt white candy melts according to package directions. Divide into bowls to add food coloring. Add 1-2 drops of food coloring and stir. If chocolate seizes up, add a drop or two of avocado oil and stir, adding additional drops of oil until desired consistency is achieved.

Dip hearts into melting chocolate or use a butter knife to spread the chocolate evenly on the tops.

To add writing, spoon melting chocolate into a small sandwich bag. Snip off a very small corner and carefully write messages on each heart.

Tips for Success/Variations: 

Here are some other ideas you can use to make yummy rice Krispie treats. 

  • Instead of melting the marshmallows in a pot on the stovetop, you can microwave them instead. They will puff up quite a bit so make sure your bowl is big.  
  • You can use marshmallow fluff instead of marshmallows but, keep in mind, you’ll get a different flavor and texture. 
  • Some yummy additions you can add to rice cereal treats are chocolate, caramel, M&Ms, Oreos, peanut butter, and s’mores.  
  • These Valentine’s Day treats can be turned into other holiday-themed treats. Try shaping pumpkin ones for Halloween, turkeys for Thanksgiving, trees for Christmas, and flags for the fourth of July.   
  • To really pump up the flavor of these marshmallow cereal hearts, add brown butter, salt, and vanilla extract.
