Slow Cooker Cube Steak
My easy slow cooker cube steak with gravy recipe features regularly in my family weekly meal plans. It’s a hearty and delicious meal that the whole family enjoy, it’s clean plates all round. Afterall who doesn’t love the taste of soft tender beef steak covered in a rich gravy.
Meals like this crock pot cubed steak become a staple, as they free up your time to get on with other things, instead of standing over a stove cooking dinner.
This quick and easy beef recipe takes minutes to prepare, just layer everything up in the slow cooker. Then place on the lid, turn it on, and forget about it until dinner time. I cook it a lot over the cooler months, preparing earlier in the day and leaving it to bubble away.
Slow cooker cube steak recipe ingredients
- BEEF: I used cube steak in this recipe as it’s a great budget friendly cut, ideal for slow cooking.
- SOUP: I add mushroom flavor with a can of cream of mushroom soup, along with a package of onion soup mix. Both ingredients add great flavor to the gravy.
- GRAVY: for ease I like to use a package of brown gravy mix and this results in a really rich and delicious gravy.
- SEASONING: there is so much flavor in the gravy mix that I keep the seasoning simple, adding salt and pepper to the beef.
How to slow cook cube steak
Spray the bowl of the slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray and place the cube steaks in the bottom of the pot.
Season with salt and pepper.

Pour the mixture over the top of the steaks.
Place the lid on the slow cooker and cook on high for 4 hours or low for 6 hours.
Flavor variations
- Cube Steak – good substitutions for cube steak would be stewing and braising cuts like round steak, or chuck roast. Both these cuts of beef are budget friendly options, ideal for family dinner planning.
- Vegetables – make this a meal in one pot and add in other vegetables. Try red onions, mushrooms, or regular bell peppers, which would all work well in this stew.
- Potatoes – you could also cook potatoes in the gravy, try adding some small new potatoes.
- Fresh herbs – add some fresh herbs to the pot, try rosemary, thyme, bay leaves, of parsley.
Serving suggestions
I like to serve this delicious round steak and gravy with a potato and vegetable based side. Mashed potatoes and green beans are my go to, however, feel free to serve it with the sides of your choice.
For a potato side try my Slow Cooked Loaded Mashed Potatoes, Air Fryer Potato Wedges, Garlic Potatoes & Green Beans or my Oven Roasted Sweet Potatoes.
I always add vegetable sides to my meals, try my Roasted Brussels Sprouts, Slow Cooker Brown Sugar Carrots, Roasted Carrots & Mushrooms, or my Roasted Broccoli.
Recipe hints & tips
- The steaks should be cooked until fork tender. The best way to check that the beef is ready is to gently press the steaks with a fork and if they start to give and break up a little they are perfectly cooked.
- Once cooked and cooled, store any leftover beef and gravy in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
- This is a great make ahead dish, as with all soups and stews, it will taste even better the longer it sits. So make the day before and allow the flavors to meld together and become even more flavorful.
- To freeze this dish, allow to cool completely and place in an airtight container. Store in the freezer for up to 3 months. When ready to enjoy, defrost overnight in the refrigerator, before heating up to piping hot.
FAQs
Cube steak is a thin beef cut from the round or top sirloin, it’s a good stewing or braising steak cut. It is tenderized and flattened out, which is why you will see small indentations across the steak.
This is a great budget-friendly cut of meat. It comes already tenderized and is ideal for slow cooking over a longer period, which makes the steak super tender and the gravy rich in beefy flavor.
You might also see cube steak called Swiss steak, cubed steak or minute steak.
No, you don’t need to brown the meat before cooking it, but if you have the time, it’s a good idea. Doing this will make the stew richer and even more flavorful.
