I make my s’mores in oven with a Graham cracker crust. This easy s’mores recipe is fast to make and because it is oven baked you can enjoy it all year round.
This recipe serves 16, but you could easily multiply if feeding a crowd, ideal when your kids have all their friends over.
How do you roast s’mores without a fire pit?
S’mores are traditionally made by roasting them over a campfire or fire pit. However, they can also be made indoors by layering them up on a cookie sheet and roasting them in a hot oven for 3 minutes.
How to make s’mores in the oven:
- Preheat the oven to broil (525F degrees).
- Unwrap the chocolate bars and divide each into 4 pieces to make a total of 16 pieces of chocolate; set aside.
- Line a large baking sheet with foil for easy clean up.
- Arrange 16 of the graham cracker squares in a single layer on the cookie sheet.
- Top each graham cracker with 2 marshmallows.
- Toast the marshmallows for 1-3 minutes in the oven set to broil (525F degrees) until golden brown on top.
- Use the middle oven rack, not the top rack close to the broiler.
Important: Do not walk away from the oven while the marshmallows are toasting. They can burn very fast! Keep a close eye on the marshmallows as they toast.
- Remove the s’mores from the oven. Turn off the oven.
- Place one square of chocolate on top of each s’more, then return the s’mores to the hot oven for 30 seconds to melt the chocolate.
- Remove the s’mores from the oven and top each with the remaining 16 graham cracker squares.
- Serve warm.
Recipe ingredients & substitutions:
- CHOCOLATE: This recipe makes 16 s’mores so I use 4 full-size Hershey’s chocolate bars, but you can swap with any other chocolate bar that you enjoy eating. Dark and white chocolate would work here too, or try a combination of chocolate. Try Reese’s, Rolo’s, or any flavor of chocolate chip.
- COOKIES: I like to use Honey Maid Graham cracker squares but you can swap the Graham crackers for any other cookies, that you enjoy eating. Oreo’s, saltines, or a good chocolate chip cookie would be ideal.
- MARSHMALLOWS: I use 2 full-size marshmallows in each s’more, but you can use mini marshmallows if that’s what you have in your own stores at home, just add a few extra.
Flavor variations:
- Swap the chocolate for some Nutella or Biscoff spread.
- Drizzle some salted caramel over the toasted marshmallows.
- Add a layer of sliced banana.
- Nut butters work a treat, try peanut, cashew, almond or hazelnut butters.
Serving suggestion:
Serve warm, straight from the oven. I like to enjoy with a glass of cold milk, or if it’s really cold outside, some hot chocolate.
Recipe hints & tips:
- Line the cookie sheet with some kitchen foil or baking parchment, this will make washing up a whole lot easier.
- DO NOT walk away from the oven while melting the marshmallows! They cook in minutes and are quick to burn, so keep your eye on them.
- Take care when handling s’mores as they melted marshmallow can get really hot.
FAQs
Do you melt the chocolate in a s’more?
Yes you melt the chocolate in a s’more, but not to the point it becomes liquid. Instead place it on top of the roasted marshmallow so that it gets nice and gooey.
What chocolate is best for s’mores?
You can use any chocolate in a s’more but I prefer to use milk chocolate over dark chocolate as it has a higher cocoa butter content therefore is melts more quickly.
How long does it take to roast marshmallows in the oven?
It only takes 2-3 minutes to roast marshmallows in the oven, so keep an eye of them to stop them from burning.
Can you reheat s’mores?
I don’t recommend reheating s’mores, they are definitely best served warm straight from the oven when they are at their most gooey best!
