Making hot cocoa bombs at home is so much easier than you might think, and in this recipe we put a fun twist on them, making Smores Hot Chocolate Bombs!
S’mores Hot Chocolate Bomb Recipe
Hot chocolate bombs are a fun way to enjoy hot chocolate.
Basically the bomb is a chocolate shell that contains hot chocolate mix.
In a Smores Hot Chocolate Bomb, it’ll also contain marshmallows!
My kids have seen the FUN hot chocolate bombs spreading around the internet and wanted me to buy them some.
However, the ones I found were around $30 for 6!
While I do love to support small businesses, and I know there is a cost of goods (and effort) involved, that was just too much to fit into my budget, especially knowing they’d want more after they enjoyed the first batch.
So I taught myself how to make them 🙂
They are fun and delicious and now I’ll share with you how to make them at home for your family 🙂
Place the milk chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl and microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring between each interval, until the chocolate chips are fully melted.
Put a spoonful of melted chocolate inside one cup on the silicone mold and use the back of the spoon to spread the chocolate up the sides of the mold.
Continue this process until all the molds are coated.
Set the remaining chocolate aside for sealing and decorating the bombs.
Allow the chocolate to set completely, around 2 to 3 hours.
You can speed up the process by placing the chocolate in the refrigerator.
When the chocolate is set, remove each of the chocolate pieces from the mold.
Add a small amount of instant hot cocoa mix to half the pieces and top the hot cocoa mix with mini marshmallows.
Reheat the chocolate in 15 second intervals until melted.
Pick up an empty chocolate piece and dip the edges into the melted chocolate.
Carefully place it on top of a filled piece and lightly press it into place.
Use your finger to smooth melted chocolate around the seam.
Continue until all the chocolate bombs are sealed.
Place a small amount of melted chocolate to the top of each bomb and place three marshmallows on top.
Drizzle the remaining melted chocolate over the top of the marshmallows and sprinkle graham cracker crumbs on top.
Allow the chocolate decorations to set before using, around 1 hour.
How to use a Hot Chocolate Bomb:
To use the hot chocolate bombs, place the bomb in the bottom of a mug.
Pour one cup of hot milk over the top of the bomb to melt the chocolate.
When the chocolate is completely melted, stir to combine.
The hot liquid melts the chocolate shell, allowing the contents of the bomb to “explode” into the liquid.
What chocolate should I use for hot chocolate bombs?
We prefer melted down chocolate chips, but you could use candy melts. Candy melts are a little easier to work with but we don’t think they taste as good as chocolate chips when used with hot chocolate. We prefer using candy melts as candy.
How long can you store hot chocolate bombs ?
All the ingredients in hot chocolate bombs are shelf stable and they will keep for a while. They don’t last long in our house though, so I haven’t really tested this personally.
How to store hot chocolate bombs
The best way to store hot chocolate bombs, after they have been made, is at room temp in an air tight container.
Hot Chocolate Bomb Tips:
- Be careful not to overheat the chocolate when melting it! Take your time and microwave in 15 second intervals.
- To avoid the chocolate breaking when you take it out of the mold, make sure you have enough chocolate on the edges. You can always add more and let it set.
