My Dutch oven round steak recipe is one of my favorite slow cook beef recipes, perfect for this time of year. I combine the round steak with pepperoncini peppers, and cook in a delicious savory beef gravy. Hands on prep time is minimal, making this quick and easy round steak recipe a go to mid week.
Dutch Oven Round Steak
I like to cook round steak and gravy in the oven. It takes minutes to prepare and layer up the beef with the gravy, then I place the pot in the oven to bubble gently, while I get on with the rest of my day.
I’ve added pepperoncini peppers to the beef, but like most of my recipes, you can adapt the recipe to suit your own tastes. Add some mushrooms, red onion, or baby potatoes to the pot turning this easy beef recipe into a one pot meal.
I’ve chosen to cook Dutch oven beef and gravy in the oven, but you can also cook it on the stovetop. So, to help you out, I’ve included instructions on cooking round steak and gravy on the stove later in this post.
Dutch oven round steak recipe ingredients
- OIL: I use olive oil to sear the beef, but you can use other oils like sunflower or rapeseed oil.
- BEEF: I used round steak in this recipe. Round steak is also know as rump and has great flavor. It also happens to be a great budget friendly cut too.
- BROTH: I use beef broth to make the gravy. Use gluten free beef broth if serving celiacs or anyone following a gluten free diet.
- SEASONING: I flavour the gravy with a packet of ranch seasoning mix as well as a packet of brown gravy mix, adding salt and pepper to season the beef.
- PEPPERS: I like to add pepperoncini peppers to the pot as they taste great and work really well with the beef.
- BUTTER: 1/4 cup of butter is placed on each steak before being cooked in the oven. The butter adds a lovely flavor and glossiness to the gravy. You can use either salted or unsalted butter, whichever you have in the refrigerator.

How to cook round steak and gravy on stove
I like to cook this recipe in the oven, that way I can forget about it and get on with your day. However, if you would like to cook Dutch oven round steak on the stove then that is really easy too.
- Follow the recipe instructions and instead of placing the pot into the oven, place it on the stove at a low temperature and allow the beef to simmer gently.
- You will need to check the beef from time to time to ensure it is not sticking to the bottom of the pot.
- It may also dry out a little on the stove so keep checking from time to time and add a little water if required.
- Cooking times may take a little longer on the stove, so make sure you account for that.
Flavor variations
- Beef Steak – chuck roast would be a great substitute for round steak in this recipe. Both these cuts of beef are budget friendly options, ideal for family dinner planning.
- Vegetables – I’ve added pepperoncini peppers to this dish, but feel free to add in other vegetables to the pot. Try red onions, mushrooms, or regular bell peppers, which would all work well too.
Serving suggestions
I like to serve this delicious round steak and gravy with a potato and vegetable based side. Mashed potatoes & green beans are my go to, however, feel free to serve it with the sides of your choice.

Recipe hints & tips
- The steaks should be cooked until fork tender. The best way to check that the beef is ready is to gently press the steaks with a fork and if they start to give and break up a little they are perfectly cooked.
- The length of the cook will depend on how thick the round steaks are cut. For thinner steaks you may need to reduce cooking time. For thicker steaks, you may need to increase cooking times.
- Cooking times will also vary depending on whether or not the beef is grass or grain fed. For more information please see below.
What is the difference between grass fed and grain fed beef?
As the terms suggest, grass fed cattle are fed on a diet of grass, whereas grain fed cattle are fed grain. both look and taste a little difference. Grass fed beef is very lean and higher in omega-3 fatty acids than grain fed. It can be identified as having a yellow colored fat, with a richer, gamier taste.
Whereas grain fed beef is a fattier cut, as a grain diet increases marbling. Grain fed beef has white colored fat and an milder, sweeter taste. Both will work equally well in this dish, so it comes down to personal taste.
Due to being a leaner beef, you may find grass fed a little more chewy as it does not have the same amount of marbling as grain fed beef. You may therefore need to adjust cooking times depending on the type of beef used.
FAQs
I cook round steak in the oven for 2 hours at 300 degrees F, until the meat is well cooked and fork tender. If the beef isn’t quite tender, place it back into the oven and cook for a further 15-30 minutes until soft and tender. However, as discussed above, cooking times will vary depending on the type of beef used and also the thickness of the steaks.
Once cooked and cooled, leftovers can be safely stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up 2-3 days. When ready to enjoy place into a pot and heat up gently on the stovetop until piping hot.
Round steak and gravy freezes really well. Once cooked and cooled, place in an airtight container and store in the freezer for up to 3 months.
