These white-hot chocolate bombs are a fun version of classic hot chocolate. Instead of putting chocolate mix directly in the warm milk, why not level up your hot cocoa game and make “exploding” bombs?! Kids absolutely love dropping the chocolate ball in the cup and watching the action.

These cocoa bombs are also great to give as gifts. They can be wrapped in pretty paper, tied with a ribbon, and given to your friends and family. They are easier to make than you would believe and you only need a silicone mold, a pastry brush, and candy melts, or chocolate chips to get started.

Tips for success/variations:

These tips, tricks, and variations will help make sure you make the BEST hot chocolate bombs possible.

  • You can use any mini marshmallows you can find at the grocery store if you can’t find the rainbow ones.
  • The process of tempering the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl or over a double boiler makes the chocolate stable at room temperature. There’s no need to put the melted chocolate inside the refrigerator.
  • Use a large round silicone mold to make the bombs large enough to hold enough cocoa mix and the marshmallows and still be able to put the empty chocolate piece over the top.
  • This chocolate bomb recipe uses a packet of instant cocoa as the mix which makes sure this drink actually tastes like creamy hot chocolate at the end.
  • You can put the rainbow sprinkles hot chocolate bomb on the bottom of the mug and pour the hot milk over the top or you can put the milk in first and gently place the bomb on top. Be sure to leave enough room for the chocolate to explode.
  • When the chocolate is fully melted, be sure to stir it all in so you can have a delicious hot drink.

How to serve:

Serve the hot cocoa on a cold winter day or at a kids’ birthday party. Or if you’re feeling in need of something special for yourself, a cup of exploding hot chocolate will make you feel warm and cozy.

How to store:

Store the chocolate pieces and the whole bombs at room temperature if you’ll be using them in the next few days. If you plan on keeping them for longer, you can store them in the fridge.

Either way, be sure to put them in an air-tight container.

You can also freeze them to use later! Make a bunch of them, freeze, and pull them out as needed.
