What toppings do you prefer on a Fish Sandwich?
When it comes to choosing what toppings you prefer on your Fish Sandwich, there are a multitude of delicious choices!
Most fast food places put just Tartar Sauce on their sandwiches, and most people seem happy with that.
Often times restaurants will offer a few more toppings, to make their sandwiches more filling.
When you’re making sandwiches at home, it opens up an array of choices, from simple to more complex.
Sometimes, the choice will depend on the choice of fish you are preparing.
The suggestions in this post will pair best with traditional breaded fish sandwiches, but will work for other types too.
Homemade Tartar Sauce is a delicious choice.
My recipe combines 1 cup mayonnaise, 1 tsp yellow mustard, 2 tsp relish, 1 tsp lemon juice, 1 tsp dill weed, and 1/2 cup chopped bell peppers. Stir together in a bowl, slather on your sandwich. Store any leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.
Don’t be intimidated with the thought of making your own Homemade Sauces.
As you can see from the recipe above, it’s just a few simple ingredients combined in a small mixing bowl, and ready to serve.
Perhaps you’d prefer more of a traditional sandwich or burger style.
Layer on the Lettuce, Tomato, Cheese, Pickles, and Mayonnaise.
You really can’t go wrong with whatever choice you make.
Sandwiches are really easy to personalize for every member of the family.
The toppings my guys prefer all tend to be items I already have on hand in the pantry or refrigerator, so I just pull them all out onto the counter and let each person assemble their own sandwich.

What type of fish you use for your sandwich is also an important decision.
My guys have always enjoyed Gorton’s Fish Fillets, found in the freezer section at the Supermarket.
Personally, I’m allergic to fish, all seafood, etc. so this works for me. Easy to prepare!
You can also purchase unbreaded fish sandwich patties from the seafood department at the supermarket.
When I’m breading my own fish patties, I prepare them just like I would chicken tenderloins.
Take the fish and dredge it in the flour, then egg mixture, then flour again, then breadcrumbs, and set to the side until all of the fish patties are covered.
Another important choice when assembling a fish sandwich, is the choice of bread.
I tend to use Sesame Seed Burger Buns, Sub Rolls, or Ciabatta Rolls because they’re easy to grab and go.
The bakery at our local supermarket, HEB, also makes some FANTASTIC specialty breads that pair well, too.
If you wanted to make some buns out of Sprite Biscuits, you’d prepare the dough the same way, then when cutting out, use a pizza/dough cutter to cut into round buns or shape into sub rolls. Bake as directed, allow to cool, then slice open and slide the fish sandwiches and toppings inside to serve.
You’ll also want to choose side dishes that pair well with fish.
We serve ours with Homemade French Fries and Easy Fry Sauce.
Copycat Cracker Barrel Cole Slaw is also delicious with Fish Sandwiches.
